Must-go events in Berlin: September 5th to 8th

While we’re soaking up the warm weather, there’s that bittersweet feeling as summer events wrap up. To make the most of these last days of outdoor parties, check out Plötzensee, Gartn.Berlin, Else, OXI, or Club der Visionaere.
Our top picks for the week: We’re torn between seeing Marina Herlop at Zenner or Saroos & RAD at Shokoladen. Thursday night’s decision is tough: vurt’s 10th anniversary or Drift Kyiv? But one thing’s clear: Else is the place to be on Friday.
On Saturday, we’re catching Amanda Donato’s dance piece “A Wake.” And for some drama, don’t miss “History of Violence” by Édouard Louis.
There are lots of new exhibitions opening this week too. We’re excited about “Mark Bradford: Keep Walking” at Hamburger Bahnhof, and the new KOW space.
And of course, the Literature Festival for those like us who are passionate about the topic.

🎧 RAD will bring a mix of poetic drone and blues-punk with some raw improvisation, while 🎧 Saroos will serve up beats, post-rock, and electronic vibes with hip-hop samples and lush instrumentals. It’s worth checking out. And if you’re a Lali Puna fan, Christoph Brandner is part of Saroos.

DRIFT KYIV

In his autobiographical novel History of Violence, French author Édouard Louis reconstructs a traumatic night, creating a work that is both a personal narrative and a penetrating social analysis of coming of age, desire, migration, and racism. Directed by Thomas Ostermeier.
A Wake by Amanda Donato

A WAKE is a dance by Amanda Donato, with sound by Stefanie Egedy and design by Maximilian Franz-Josef Melzel. In 5 acts, it honors Donato’s grandmother, Catalina Trezza, who had Alzheimer’s, exploring grief and memory through movement, light, and sound, ending with a tribute to her cooking.

Georges Bizet’s Carmen presents one of opera’s most complex heroines—seen as a seductress, anarchist, or clairvoyant unafraid of her fate. The opera challenges Romantic norms by depicting a harsh, proletarian world where Don José’s obsession with Carmen leads to his downfall, contrasting bourgeois values with anarchic freedom.

In Buraco (Portuguese for “hole”), everything has holes and everything makes holes. It’s all about crossing, leaving, entering, falling into, lingering, and disappearing. Looking through to discover the other side: black, skin-like, green, patterned, hairy. The piece was created to explore new ways of relating to a young audience, opening up space for an adventure of the senses and sensitivity.
Mark Bradford: Keep Walking

Bradford’s “social abstraction” style brings materials to life with meaning. His big paintings explore the Great Migration and the rail impact in the U.S., and his sculptural installations and multimedia pieces make the exhibit interactive, diving into themes of identity and behavior.
KOW 15th Anniversary: Group Show - VUL|NE|RA|BLE

KOW is celebrating its 15th anniversary and opening a new space in Berlin. The opening comes with the new group show 'VUL|NE|RA|BLE', featuring 25 artists.
Yasuhiro Ogawa – Into the Silence & The Dreaming

The Japanese photographer Yasuhiro Ogawa is showcasing his series Into the Silence. His color photos from northern Japan capture dreamlike landscapes inspired by the haiku poet Matsuo Bashō. Ogawa’s earlier work, The Dreaming, features black-and-white shots that blend lyrical and contemplative styles.
DYSTOPIA Sound Art Biennial 2024

The DYSTOPIA Sound Art Biennial 2024 focuses on the Indian subcontinent this year. Under the direction of Nida Ghouse and Georg Klein, 22 projects will be exhibited, featuring installations, performances, concerts, and a performance picnic in the Tiergarten - 14, 21, 28.09 at 3 pm with reservation.
