The Next Day Berlin: One-Day Guide to Exploring Potsdam
What to do on sunny days outside of Berlin? A quick guide to escaping to Potsdam.
Hi,
We're bidding farewell to summer, but some amazing hot days are still ahead. We've put together a mini guide for those looking to escape Berlin for a day. So, here's the scoop: ditch Berlin and head over to the charming neighboring town of Potsdam to soak up some nature vibes
Here's a one-day itinerary in Potsdam to enjoy nature and culture like a local.
Bringing your bike can make the difference so you can have more mobility between points. If you don't want to get yours, you can also rent a Next Bike at the train station or at Pedales.

Morning
Arriving in Potsdam, head straight from the station to the Holländisches Viertel for a yoga class at Yogastudio Potsdam, which will set you up for the rest of the day. After the class, make your way to Café La Maison du Chocolat for a Parisian-style sidewalk breakfast, perfect for some people-watching. If you're a chocolate enthusiast, we highly recommend indulging in their hot chocolate paired with a slice of your favorite cake. With so many options to choose from, the hardest part will be picking just one.
Hop on your bike and make your way to Neuer Garten. Start your journey at the Gothic Library, then follow the path along the river towards the Marborpalais, passing by the Orangerie. Take a moment to relish the vibrant flower garden and perhaps pause to immerse yourself in a good book. The map is here.
Lunch Time
Head to the beautiful palace Cecilienhof for a visit. You can choose to purchase tickets and explore the palace or simply take pleasure in strolling through their gardens and enjoying the view of the river. By this point, you might be craving a cold beer. Near the palace, you'll discover Meierei Potsdam, one of the city's oldest breweries. They not only offer delicious beers but also serve up classic Bratwurst, all enjoyed al fresco with a picturesque river view.
Afternoon
Spread out a towel on the grass and take a moment to truly disconnect. Whether you head to the beach or find a shady spot under a tree, relaxation is the goal. You can spend the whole afternoon on the beach or you can visit the historic Villa Schöninger, which also features the charming cafe Pedales. During Germany's division, Villa Schöninger was located in the 'death strip,' the area separating West Berlin from East Germany. The villa, near the Glienicke Bridge—famously known as the 'Bridge of Spies'—witnessed numerous spy exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union. If you’re visiting today - August 30th, don’t miss the Jazz in the Park from 5 pm.
Don’t miss this performance if you are going to Potsdam this Friday or Sunday:
Buraco (Hole) by Elisabete Finger
Friday, 06.09, 7 pm & Sunday, 08.08, 11 am. fabrik Potsdam Schiffbauergasse 10, 14467 Potsdam. Tickets: 16€. Sunday, 08.08: Free Admission.
In Buraco (Portuguese for “hole”), everything has holes and everything makes holes. It’s all about crossing, leaving, entering, falling into, lingering, and disappearing. Looking through to discover the other side: black, skin-like, green, patterned, hairy. The piece was created to explore new ways of relating to a young audience, opening up space for an adventure of the senses and sensitivity.
Dinner
Here are three of my three favorite spots in Potsdam. They serve up great food, top-notch service, and a cozy atmosphere. Take your pick and dive into the culinary adventure!
🍜 My Keng: For a taste of authentic Vietnamese cuisine in Potsdam, head to My Keng. This restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere and friendly service, serving up delicious dishes with bold flavors. Don't miss out on their must-try Curries.
🍝 Genusswerkstatt: Savor delicious homemade pasta at this charming spot. While it may not be your typical Italian restaurant, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the chef's creative sauce variations. And don't forget to treat yourself to dessert before settling the bill. It's a culinary experience worth savoring.
🍷 11-line: If you're not feeling too hungry, why not grab some drinks at a popular café among the city's students? You can sit outside on the sidewalks, grab a board game or some cards, and spend some fun time in this place before heading home.
🍹 Fritz´n: This is the tip for those who are in no hurry to get back to Berlin and want to explore Potsdam's nightlife for good drinks
